Supporting your child’s development in maths

At Danesholme Infants academy we have a calculation policy which you can use to support your child’s development in maths.

Here are some of the key skills your child is expected to achieve by the end of each Year group and ideas you can do to support your child at home.

End of Year expectations

EYFS

  • Count to and across 20, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number.
  • Count, read and write numbers to 20 in numerals.
  • When given a number, identify one more and one less.
  • Identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations.

 

Ideas to support

  • Practise writing numbers
  • Read numbers in the environments around them e.g. house numbers
  • Counting and moving- count jumps/ skips/ hops        

Year 1

  • Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number.
  • Count, read and write numbers to 100 in numerals.
  • Count in multiples of twos, fives and tens.
  • When given a number, identify one more and one less.
  • Identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations including the number line, and use the language of: equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most, least
  • Read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words.

Ideas to support

  • Bingo- writing and finding a number
  • Counting and moving- count jumps/ skips/ hops
  • Playing board games to develop counting forwards and backwards e.g. snakes and ladders
  • Matching pairs- numerals and words

Year 2
Count in steps of 2, 3, and 5 from 0, and in tens from any number, forward and backward.

  • Identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations, including the number line.
  • Compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100: use < > and = signs.
  • Read and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals and words.

Ideas to support

  • Cooking- measuring/ estimating amounts
  • Bingo- writing and finding a number
  • Counting and moving- count jumps/ skips/ hops
  • Matching pairs- numerals and words
  • Describe a number for your child to write e.g. it has 3 tens and 4 ones…
